STACIE MCGREGOR
Canadian jazz composer/pianist Stacie McGregor began studying piano at the age of six. As a twelve year old she received early recognition as an accomplished composer when she was awarded third place in "The Yamaha National Song Writing Contest". A consistently expressive player she received a Juno award in 1999 for her performance on the "Best World Music" recording Omnisource by Madagascar Slim.
Her debut CD "Straight Up" received international recognition charting in more than 20 countries. The song titled "Top Cat" from the same recording was selected as a finalist in the Jazz Category of the 2004 USA Songwriting Competition.
In 2006 she co-led with saxophonist Billy Robinson a quartet album with special guests Curtis Lundy on bass and Billy Hart on drums titled “Swift” featuring compositions from McGregor’s and Robinson’s respective songbooks.
In 2007 she performed with her quintet as a main stage act at the Montreal Jazz Festival receiving her 2nd nomination for the General Motors Grand Jazz Award and the Galaxie Rising Star Award of the CBC.
The past 2 1/2 years she has been touring as a member of 2008 Juno Award winner Brandi Disterheft’s band and recently has become a member of Archie Alleyne’s hard-bop band Kollage.
In January this year she went back into the studio and recorded a new album featuring her original compositions with jazz greats Santi DeBriano on bass and Billy Hart on drums. The album’s release is scheduled for winter 2010.
